The governments of Cross River and neighbouring Ebonyi states have agreed to regularly embark on sensitization of their borderline communities to desist from all forms of encroachment, which often aggravated to bloodbaths and deaths.
This agreement was contained in a 5-point communique adopted by officials from both states and signed by the Deputy Governors of Cross River State and Ebonyi State yesterday in the Ebonyi deputy governor’s office in Abakaliki.
While they awaited the National Boundary Commission’s (NBC) boundary definition, the two deputy governors stated that sensitization was the first step.
The statement indicates that in order to restore peace and guarantee that no more lives are lost and property is damaged in these towns, the deputy governors—who also serve as chairs of their state’s State Boundary Committees—must get in touch with the NBC and request that boundary delineation work be expedited.
Additionally, they have decided to set up procedures for cooperative security teams to police the impacted areas.
Over the years, there have been ongoing boundary disputes between the states of Cross River and Ebonyi along the border corridors of Ndiagu Amagu, Ikwo Local Government Area, and Adadama, Abi Local Government Area, respectively.
