Court Halts Reinstatement of Sanusi as Kano Emir

A Federal High Court in Kano has intervened, preventing the Kano State Government from implementing the Emirate Council Repeal Law.

Justice Mohammed Liman’s order came following a plea by Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan Agundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba of the Kano Emirate.

The Kano State House of Assembly dissolved all four newly established emirate councils in the state, effectively nullifying the law.

In a surprising turn, Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, reinstated Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano, who was dethroned four years ago by a former governor, Umar Ganduje.

Additionally, five emirs appointed by Ganduje were deposed, with a 48-hour ultimatum to vacate their residences and hand over affairs to the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The court case involves various state entities and security agencies, with the court directing all processes to be served on the Inspector-General of Police in Abuja.

The court’s interim injunction maintains the pre-existing state of affairs until the fundamental rights application hearing scheduled for June 3, 2024.

This legal battle stems from the repeal of the Kano State Emirs Law, which had established multiple emirates, now dissolved, consolidating the Kano Emirate under a single ruler once again.
