Couple Arrested in Osumenyi for Severe Child Abuse and Starvation

Authorities have arrested Uche Mbonu and his wife, Peace Mbonu, on charges of child abuse, starvation, and neglect of their five young children.

The arrest was executed by security operatives in Nnewi South and the couple was subsequently handed over to the police, facilitated by the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Hon Ify Obinabo.

In response to the allegations, the couple denied intentionally starving the children. They claimed the children have a habit of eating raw rice, which frustrates them. The couple pleaded for leniency, insisting they do feed the children, but the children prefer raw rice for reasons unknown.

The eldest child, Chigbo Mbonu, aged 17, shared that Peace Mbonu is his father’s third wife. Since her arrival, the family has faced severe hardships. Chigbo disclosed that they often eat just once a day, relying on raw rice and palm kernels when food is scarce. He also mentioned he had to leave school to help his father in a block industry, where he molds blocks with 4 to 6 bags of cement daily.

A physical examination conducted by the Women Affairs Commissioner revealed significant signs of starvation among the children, indicating a dire need for medical attention.

Mr. Uche Mbonu has two previous wives before marrying Peace Mbonu, who was initially his salesgirl. The children involved are from his previous marriages.

Security operatives reported that after arresting Uche Mbonu, Peace Mbonu attempted to hide in Nnewi, her maternal home, but was eventually captured.

Hon Ify Obinabo condemned the couple’s actions, emphasizing the government’s commitment, under Governor Soludo’s administration, to minimizing child labor, abuse, and maltreatment.

The couple has been handed over to the police for further investigation and subsequent legal action.
