The 2024 Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) amendment bill has been passed by the Enugu State House of Assembly.
If the measure is enacted into law, political parties would be required to pay the state election commission money in order to be eligible to run in municipal elections.
The Enugu State administration rescheduled the local government election scheduled for February 24 to October 2024, according to a report by Ugamatv on January 25, 2024.
The postponement came Just one month remained before the council elections.
In a statement announcing the postponement, State Independent Electoral Commission Chairman Mike Ajogu, SAN, stated that the action was taken in response to what he described as a court order asking the commission to modify its initial guidelines and schedule that were published in the Enugu State official gazette on September 26, 2023.
However, an election commission official criticized the postponement, stating that it was driven by opposing political interests.
According to the official, the commission was supposed to give 360 days’ notice as stipulated by law, instead of the 120 days’ notice it gave.
“The court said we must follow the Independent National Electoral Commission guideline; that we cannot use a different guideline other than that of INEC, even though we have been using the local government law,” the official said.
