Martin Chukwunwike, the current Enugu State Commissioner for Housing, has been elected as the new Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State. This decision was reached during the PDP Congress for the state, which took place on Saturday at Okpara Square.
The election of Chukwunwike was notably uncontested, a fact confirmed by Dr. Tony Iyoha, the chairman of the PDP Congress Committee for Enugu State. Dr. Iyoha announced the results, officially naming Chukwunwike as the state chairman of the PDP, along with other members of the newly elected State Executive Committee.
Chukwunwike brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served as a Commissioner in the State Executive Council during three separate terms: from 2003 to 2007, 2007 to 2011, and from 2023 until his latest election as PDP state chairman.
Speaking about the election, Dr. Iyoha stated, “As the chair of the Enugu State PDP Congress electoral committee, it is my duty to declare Martin Chukwunwike the duly elected chairman of the PDP State Executive Committee.”
In his remarks, Dr. Iyoha also expressed appreciation for the efforts of Governor Peter Mbah and his administration in keeping the PDP united in Enugu, particularly in light of the challenges faced following the 2023 general elections. He said, “We commend the government of Enugu State for fostering unity within the PDP. The process has been smooth, thanks to Governor Peter Mbah’s leadership.”

We will ensure the PDP remains the party of choice in Enugu State,” Chukwunwike said. He also emphasized his commitment to providing unwavering support to Governor Mbah and further building on the achievements of the previous administration.
Chukwunwike also highlighted the upcoming local government elections, promising to ensure continued success for the party. “We are dedicated to achieving complete success in the forthcoming elections for local government chairmen and councillors,” he assured.
Other newly elected executive members of the Enugu State PDP include Chief Steve Oruruo as Deputy Chairman, Mr. Chukwudi Nnadozie as Secretary, and Mr. Toby Odinwankpa as Auditor, among others.
In his farewell address, the outgoing chairman, Chief Augustine Nnamani, reflected on the challenges faced by the party, particularly referencing the influence of Peter Obi in the region. He credited Governor Peter Mbah with reviving the party’s fortunes, stating, “Despite the challenges we faced, we are now back as the leading choice in Enugu State.”
