Veteran singer and activist Charles Oputa, widely known as Charly Boy, has shared a heartfelt tribute to Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the late President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, who recently passed away.
In an emotional Facebook post on Thursday, Charly Boy recounted how Iwuanyanwu was the first Nigerian to believe in his potential and support his dreams financially.
Reflecting on their initial encounter, Charly Boy wrote, “When I returned from the USA in 1981, I was just a broke dreamer. Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu met me by chance in my village, Oguta, after I had distanced myself from my parents who didn’t support my vision. He generously gave me $8,000. I was in shock. That moment was pivotal, allowing me to start my Jankara studio in my village and build my brand. He was the first Nigerian to invest in my dream.”

Charly Boy expressed profound gratitude for Iwuanyanwu’s pivotal role in his life and career, underscoring the impact of legacy through the lives one touches. He stated, “Legacy is about the lives we touch, the inspiration we provide, and the moments we alter someone’s path—making them think, cry, laugh, or argue. More than anything, we are remembered for our smiles, shared with loved ones and strangers alike. Chief, your unexpected support was life-changing. I know many others have similar stories of your generosity. I remain forever grateful. Rest in peace, biggest bro/father.”
The passing of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu at the age of 82, following a brief illness, has drawn condolences from across the nation. President Bola Tinubu, former President Muhammadu Buhari, and various governors have all mourned the loss of this esteemed leader.
