On the evening of November 5, 2024, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, the parish priest of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Obollo, Isiala Mbano, Imo State, was reportedly abducted by gunmen while traveling near the Ayayi community. According to church officials, the priest was returning to his parish after completing an assignment.
The Catholic Diocese of Okigwe confirmed the incident, releasing a statement urging prayers for Fr. Azubuike’s safe return. Very Rev. Fr. Princewill Iwuanyanwu, Chancellor and Secretary of the Diocese, expressed deep concern and called on both clergy and laity to pray for the priest’s well-being.
Fr. Azubuike, ordained in 2014, is widely respected in his community. David Ajaero, Obollo ward councillor, also verified the abduction, emphasizing the community’s commitment to continuous prayers for the priest’s immediate and safe release. Local residents have taken to social media, pleading for his unconditional return.
Imo State Police Command spokesperson Henry Okoye confirmed that the Police Commissioner has deployed a specialized investigation team dedicated to rescuing Fr. Azubuike and bringing the kidnappers to justice. The command is actively working on the case and remains hopeful for a positive outcome.
