Breaking: University of Nigeria’s School of General Studies Dean, Prof. Oguejiofo Ujam, Kidnapped by Gunmen

Prof. Oguejiofo Ujam, the esteemed Dean of the School of General Studies at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), was reportedly abducted by gunmen early on Sunday. Sources indicate that the kidnapping took place on the Ugwuogo-Nike-Opi-Nsukka Road, a route increasingly notorious for such attacks.

Prof. Ujam, a senior lecturer in the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, was reportedly traveling along the road when he was intercepted by unidentified armed men. Although details surrounding the abduction remain limited, as of the latest update, the kidnappers have yet to contact his family or the authorities with any ransom demands.

This unfortunate incident follows closely on the heels of another kidnapping on the same stretch of road. An officer from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), identified as Emeason Chima, was reportedly taken by gunmen on Saturday while driving through the area. Chima, who serves at the Ugbokolo Unit under RS4.211, was reportedly stopped near Maduka University in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, Enugu State. His captors have allegedly demanded a hefty ransom of N50 million for his release.

The spate of kidnappings in this region is raising serious security concerns among residents and commuters. There are also reports—though unconfirmed—that a commercial bus with multiple passengers was targeted by gunmen on Friday along the same route.

Efforts to obtain an official statement from the Enugu State Police Command regarding these incidents have been unsuccessful. Calls to DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the police spokesperson, went unanswered, leaving the public anxious for updates on security measures in the affected area.

This rise in kidnappings along the Ugwuogo-Nike-Opi-Nsukka corridor is prompting calls for intensified security operations to safeguard travelers and residents alike.
