Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has accused the administration led by President Bola Tinubu of diverting public funds via covert payments for fuel subsidy.
Expressing concern over the lack of transparency surrounding subsidy payments and the government’s reluctance to disclose the expenditure, Atiku raised questions about the administration’s integrity.
In a statement released in Abuja on Thursday, the former Vice President criticized the clandestine nature of the fuel subsidy regime, citing it as a deterrent to potential investments in the oil sector.
“Atiku likened the opaque handling of subsidy issues at the federal level to the governance style observed during Tinubu’s tenure in Lagos. Despite claims of subsidy removal, conflicting statements from government officials only add to the confusion,” he said.

Referring to contradictions within the administration regarding subsidy removal, Atiku pointed out inconsistencies in statements made by key figures such as the Special Adviser on Energy, Olu Verheijen, and Finance Minister Wale Edun.
“The lack of clarity on subsidy matters raises concerns about the diversion of funds meant for the Federation Account, compromising accountability and depriving states and local governments of their rightful share,” Atiku emphasized.
He called upon the National Assembly to prioritize investigations into the subsidy issue and urged members to fulfill their oversight duties diligently to prevent further financial mismanagement.
Atiku warned against turning a blind eye to what he described as “daylight robbery,” stressing the importance of accountability in governance.
