The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has aligned with the ongoing nationwide strike organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) following the Federal Government’s failure to meet the unions’ minimum wage demands.
In a directive issued by ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke to branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators, lecturers across Nigerian universities are urged to participate in the strike as an affiliate of the congress.
The decision to join the strike comes amidst ASUU’s dissatisfaction with the FG’s handling of key academic matters, including the failure to appoint Governing Councils for Federal Universities and what the union perceives as a lack of commitment to academic welfare.
ASUU, during a press briefing at the University of Abuja, criticized the recent salary increments for professors and other academics, viewing them as precarious wage awards susceptible to withdrawal by the government.

The National Universities Commission’s dissolution of governing councils and boards across federal universities further exacerbated ASUU’s grievances, leading to the decision to align with the NLC and TUC strike.
ASUU’s participation in the strike as an affiliate of NLC highlights the union’s resolve to press for its demands beyond the minimum wage issue, potentially prolonging the industrial action until broader academic concerns are addressed.
