Angry Mob Sets Revenue Collectors Ablaze After Fatal Accident in Anambra

In a tragic turn of events in Onitsha, Anambra State, two revenue collectors were burned to death by an angry mob after a tipper truck accident led to the death of a bystander. The incident occurred on Venn Road near Egerton Bus Stop.

According to eyewitnesses, six revenue collectors were reportedly chasing a tipper driver over an unpaid levy. In the process, they allegedly attempted to seize control of the vehicle by dragging its steering wheel. This action caused the driver to lose control, leading the truck to fatally hit a pedestrian.

Following the accident, chaos erupted as the mob retaliated. While four of the revenue collectors managed to escape, two were caught and set ablaze on the spot.

A witness shared, “These revenue collectors have been a menace in Anambra State. This is one death too many. The victim was a well-known individual in the area, and the actions of these touts have led to avoidable tragedies.”

Over the past two years, incidents involving revenue collectors have drawn widespread criticism, with locals accusing them of endangering lives in their pursuit of payments.

Reacting to the incident, the Anambra State Police Command, through its spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the fatal accident and mob action. He stated, “The police responded swiftly to the scene and are currently working with relevant authorities to investigate the matter. Steps are being taken to prevent such incidents in the future.”

The incident has reignited debates on the activities of revenue collectors in the state and their role in public safety. Residents are now calling on the Anambra State government to review the operations of revenue agencies to prevent further loss of life.
