Anambra to Implement N70,000 Minimum Wage and Free Senior Education Starting October

Starting next month, the Anambra State government will roll out the payment of a new N70,000 minimum wage for workers, as announced by Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo. This bold move was revealed during a meeting held at the Prof. Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre in Awka, where the governor addressed principals and headteachers of public primary and secondary schools across the state.

The introduction of the N70,000 minimum wage is set to begin in October, marking a significant financial boost for civil servants in Anambra State. The governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of workers despite financial challenges.

In addition to the wage increase, Governor Soludo unveiled a new policy that will provide free education for senior students in all public secondary schools. This initiative is expected to commence next week and will cover students in Senior Secondary School 1 to 3 (SSS 1-3). Those who have already paid the N5,000 school fees for the current term will receive refunds.

Governor Soludo expressed his dedication to expanding human capital development in the state, noting that this free education policy is part of broader efforts to ensure that every child has access to quality education, regardless of financial status.

The Anambra State government has been committed to free education for pupils in public schools from Basic to Junior Secondary School classes since 2023. With the expansion to include senior secondary students, the state now offers full free education to all public school students from primary through to senior secondary school.

In his remarks, Governor Soludo acknowledged the financial constraints faced by the government but reassured the public that his administration is working hard to fulfill its promises, prioritizing the welfare of workers and the education sector.
