Anambra State Partners with UNDP to Launch Makerspace for Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The Anambra State government, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has launched a state-of-the-art Makerspace in Awka to empower youth with entrepreneurial and technological skills. The initiative aligns with Governor Charles Soludo’s vision of making Anambra a top-tier technology hub in Africa under the mantra “Everything Technology, Technology Everywhere.”

Announced on Tuesday, the Makerspace aims to address key gaps in Anambra’s innovation ecosystem identified during the UNDP-Anambra stakeholders meeting on digital transformation held in August 2024. These gaps, particularly prevalent in tertiary institutions, have hindered the state’s technological growth.

The Makerspace, set to open just before the highly anticipated Anambra Innovation Week 2024 (November 25–29), is designed to provide cutting-edge resources, hands-on training, and collaborative spaces. The goal is to help young innovators transform their ideas into scalable businesses.

Key features of the facility include:

  • Robotics, textiles, and electronics labs
  • Prototyping and advanced technological experimentation zones
  • Collaborative spaces for brainstorming, ideation, and project pitching
  • Integration of global standards while celebrating Anambra’s rich heritage

Governor Soludo emphasized the Makerspace’s transformative potential, stating, “This collaboration with UNDP is a major step toward economic growth and technological innovation. Technology is our bridge to a prosperous future, and through this initiative, we aim to position Anambra as Africa’s Silicon Valley.”

He added that the Makerspace would be instrumental in building the “Anambra Digital Tribe”—a community of innovators poised to drive economic transformation and leave a global impact.

Inclusivity is a cornerstone of the Makerspace. The facility will offer tailored programs for:

  • Women
  • Persons with disabilities
  • Individuals with low literacy skills
  • Youth from underserved and rural communities

UNDP Resident Representative Elsie Attafuah lauded the project as a game-changer for the region’s youth, highlighting the importance of empowering Nigeria’s talented young population. “Innovation and local creativity are not optional; they are essential for economic resilience and growth,” Attafuah said.

She expressed gratitude to the Anambra State government, private sector partners, and the Mastercard Foundation for their pivotal roles in supporting the initiative.

Chinwe Okoli, Special Adviser to Governor Soludo on Innovation and Business Incubation, described the Makerspace as a key addition to the state’s Solution Innovation District, a hub aimed at attracting partnerships from leading institutions.

“This facility will not only nurture local talent but also solidify Anambra’s reputation as a center of innovation and creativity,” Okoli stated.

The Makerspace is expected to redefine entrepreneurship in the region by equipping youth with the tools they need to succeed while fostering social progress and economic inclusion.
