The Anambra State Government has pledged to bring to justice the individuals responsible for the recent cult-related killings in the Nibo community, Awka South Local Government Area. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday during the ‘Nibo Onwa Asaa’ New Yam festival, where gunmen suspected to be cultists opened fire on attendees near the Oye Nwochichi Market. Reports indicate that at least 13 people were killed, with eight victims dying at the scene and more casualties recorded later.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers arrived in a Lexus 300 Jeep and launched a shooting spree, targeting those enjoying the festivities. In response, the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, issued a statement on Monday condemning the violence and affirming the government’s commitment to apprehend the culprits.
Mefor assured the public that the state government is taking decisive action to address the rising wave of cult-related violence. “This is yet another act of violent crime tied to cult activities, and the government is resolute in its efforts to eradicate this menace,” Mefor stated. He expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and promised that the authorities would conduct a thorough investigation to bring the criminals to justice.
The state government also called on the public to provide any information that could assist in the investigation, guaranteeing confidentiality and offering a reward for helpful tips. Mefor encouraged law-abiding residents to continue their daily activities without fear, as the government is collaborating with security forces to ensure the safety of the community.
