The Anambra State House of Assembly is in mourning following the sudden demise of its former Deputy Speaker, Ikechukwu Oseke. The respected politician, who was 64 years old, passed away on Monday.
Oseke, a native of Umuawulu in Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State, had just celebrated his last birthday on July 27. The tragic incident occurred during his morning exercise routine at Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, where he collapsed and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, despite efforts to revive him, he was declared dead upon arrival.
Born in 1960, Ikechukwu Oseke served his people diligently as a representative of the Awka South 2 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly from 2011 to 2019 under the banner of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). His leadership qualities earned him the position of Deputy Speaker during the sixth Assembly, where he left an indelible mark through various constituency projects and people-oriented initiatives.
In a heartfelt statement released on Wednesday, the Speaker of the Anambra State Assembly, Somtochukwu Udeze, expressed profound sorrow over Oseke’s passing, describing it as a “rude shock” to the entire legislative community. Udeze lauded Oseke’s exceptional qualities, including his peaceful nature, philanthropy, and dedication to legislative duties. He noted that Oseke’s contributions to the development of his community and the state at large will be sorely missed.

“The deceased was known for his peaceful disposition, humane nature, and legislative prowess,” Udeze said. “His passing is a significant loss not only to Umuawulu and Awka South but also to the entire state and nation. He was one of the finest politicians of his time.”
The Speaker also extended his condolences to Oseke’s family, urging them to uphold the values their late husband and father stood for, particularly his commitment to service, both to God and humanity as a devout Christian.
Oseke had once aspired to represent the Awka North and Awka South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives under APGA but narrowly lost in the primaries. After his political career, he ventured into the freight forwarding business in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he specialized in importing fishing feeds. A man of diverse interests, Oseke also studied law and recently completed a Ph.D. in Public Administration.
He is survived by his wife, children, and other close relatives, who are left to cherish his memory and legacy.
