Analyst Criticizes Labour Party Supporters Amid Otti-Kalu Controversy

Political analyst Uzokwe Ndubuisi has voiced strong criticism against supporters of the Labour Party (LP), accusing them of “selective amnesia” in their reactions to a recent invitation extended by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, to Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, urging him to rejoin the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ndubuisi did not hold back in his remarks, expressing frustration with what he perceives as hypocrisy among LP supporters. He argued that they have conveniently overlooked Governor Otti’s history of frequently changing political affiliations.

“In the beginning, I intended to remain silent on this issue,” Ndubuisi wrote. “However, I was provoked by the hypocrisy displayed by Labour Party supporters, who seem to have forgotten that their revered Otti made similar moves just a few months ago.”

Ndubuisi traced Otti’s political journey, highlighting how the governor unsuccessfully contested the governorship of Abia State under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2015 and 2019. After these setbacks, Otti joined the APC in 2020, but when he failed to secure the party’s ticket for the 2023 governorship election, he switched to the Labour Party, where he eventually secured victory.

“Sometimes, I wonder how people can conveniently ‘not remember’ because ‘forgetting’ is not an option unless they suffer from selective amnesia,” Ndubuisi remarked, emphasizing his view on the inconsistent stances of LP supporters.

He also recalled an incident from October 2023, where Otti visited Imo State and boldly declared that the APC’s reign in the state was coming to an end, urging Governor Hope Uzodinma to prepare for a handover. Ndubuisi questioned the silence of LP supporters during this aggressive campaign, contrasting it with their reaction to Kalu’s recent overture to Otti. He argued that while Otti was praised for his efforts to strengthen the LP, Kalu’s invitation was met with coordinated media attacks, which Ndubuisi suggested were orchestrated by Otti’s camp. “Nobody called him a monster. Nobody hired social media influencers to tarnish his image,” Ndubuisi pointed out.

The analyst also speculated on how Otti might behave in future political campaigns, particularly in Edo State, questioning whether he would show the same level of commitment to the Labour Party. Ndubuisi hinted at the potential for similar controversies, saying, “Let’s see how he campaigns for his party—if he doesn’t reassure his supporters that LP will take over the Edo State government house.”

In conclusion, Ndubuisi referenced a quote from Franklin Raj, underscoring the notion that “Selective Amnesia” is a convenient trait that allows individuals to remember only what aligns with their preferred narrative. This commentary has sparked broader discussions on the importance of political loyalty and consistency in Nigeria’s dynamic political landscape.
