AGN Reinstates Adanma Luke and Lifts Ban on Film Shoots in Waterways

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has lifted the suspension on film producer Adanma Luke and removed the ban on shooting movies in riverine areas, according to a statement from the guild’s President, Emeka Rollas.

Adanma Luke, the producer of the tragic film ‘The Other Side of Life,’ had been suspended following the April 10, 2024, incident where Nollywood actor John Paul Odonwodo, also known as Junior Pope, and four other crew members drowned after their boat capsized on the River Niger in Asaba, Delta State.

In response to the tragedy, the AGN had indefinitely suspended Ms. Luke for violating safety protocols and had prohibited its members from working with her. The guild also banned films involving waterways to prevent similar incidents.

However, after a comprehensive review during the National Executive Council meeting, the AGN has decided to lift the suspension on Ms. Luke and allow film productions in riverine areas once again. “The decisions were made to foster a collaborative and safe working environment for all our members,” said AGN National Secretary Abubakar Yakubu in the statement.

This move comes as a significant relief for the Nollywood industry, which has seen a halt in productions involving waterways since the ban was enforced. The lifting of these restrictions is expected to reignite creativity and exploration in film locations, while ensuring enhanced safety measures are in place.

The AGN emphasized the importance of adhering to strict safety protocols to safeguard the lives of actors and crew members during such shoots. “We are committed to implementing stringent safety measures to prevent future tragedies,” Yakubu added.

The reinstatement of Adanma Luke marks a pivotal moment for her career, allowing her to resume her work in Nollywood after months of suspension. The guild’s decision underscores its dedication to maintaining high safety standards while supporting its members’ professional growth.
