Abia State to Enhance Education by Training 2,000 Teachers and Increasing School Security

The Abia State Government is set to implement a comprehensive plan to improve the quality of education by training 2,000 master trainers who will, in turn, train other teachers across the state. This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, during a press briefing on the outcomes of the latest executive council meeting led by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu highlighted that 200 teachers have already completed the training, and the remaining 1,800 teachers are scheduled to receive their training shortly. Additionally, the Abia State Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) has completed the screening, interviewing, and shortlisting process for 40 educators who will be trained under the Abia State School Enhancement Team Program.

In a related development, the state government has begun deploying security personnel to public schools to ensure the safety of students, staff, and property. This initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at reforming the education sector within the state.

“Deploying security personnel to schools is a crucial step in our ongoing efforts to enhance the education system in Abia. This measure is designed to protect the lives and property of students and staff, fulfilling a promise made by the state government,” Kanu said.

Moreover, the Commissioner revealed that the state has plans to promote 5,746 staff members of ASUBEB as part of a strategy to boost morale and productivity within the education sector. He noted that the Abia State School Enhancement Team Program is committed to maintaining high standards, as evidenced by the careful screening of the 40 educators selected for quality assurance roles.

In addition to these educational reforms, the state government is also set to inaugurate a newly upgraded eye center, which is an extension of the Abia Specialist Hospital located at Amachara. The inauguration is scheduled for Tuesday, September 3, 2024.
