Abia State Declares Free, Compulsory Education, Warns of Penalties for Non-Compliance

The Abia State government has officially announced free and compulsory education for all children in public schools from Primary One to Junior Secondary School Three, effective January 2025. This policy applies to all residents of Abia, regardless of their state of origin, as part of the government’s commitment to ensuring quality, accessible education for all.

In a recent press briefing, Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, highlighted the government’s determination to enforce this policy. He warned that parents and guardians who fail to send their children to school will face prosecution under the Abia Child’s Rights Law of 2006. “The government has made education free and mandatory, and it is now a criminal offense to deny children access to education,” Kanu stated.

This education initiative is in line with Governor Alex Otti’s vision to uplift the quality of education in Abia State. The administration has also confirmed plans to relocate the Abia State University’s Law Faculty back to the main campus in Uturu, a move aimed at consolidating resources and optimizing learning environments.

In addition to educational reforms, the government has announced the rehabilitation of nine more roads across various areas of the state, with further project details expected soon. Moreover, the state will address concerns related to implementing the new minimum wage to improve the welfare of civil servants.

The administration has also prioritized repairs on the Osisioma flyover, a significant infrastructure project built by the previous administration, which has begun to show signs of structural issues. The Commissioner noted the visible widening of openings on the flyover, adding that, while it currently poses no immediate threat, repairs are essential to prevent further damage.

This sweeping set of reforms reflects Governor Otti’s commitment to enhancing education, infrastructure, and public welfare across Abia State.
