Abia Representative Alex Ikwechegh Faces Backlash After Allegedly Assaulting Bolt Driver, Threatens to ‘Make Him Disappear’

In a viral incident, Alex Ikwechegh, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives representing the Aba North and South Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has come under fire for allegedly assaulting a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya. The altercation reportedly occurred on Sunday at Ikwechegh’s residence in Maitama, Abuja, where the driver was delivering a package.

The video, which quickly gained traction on social media, shows Ikwechegh repeatedly slapping and verbally assaulting the driver. The lawmaker took offense when the driver asked him to come outside to receive his delivery—a package containing snails. Ikwechegh, visibly angered, berated the driver, asserting that it was “disrespectful” for him to be asked to step outside.

In the footage, Ikwechegh threatened the driver, saying, “Do you know who I am? I can make this man disappear in Nigeria, and nothing will happen.” He further added, “I’m not going to give this boy one naira of my money.” The video captures Ikwechegh boasting about his influence, stating he could handle the driver himself rather than involving the police.

At one point, Ikwechegh told the driver, “I will slap you, and there’s nothing you can do. My name is Honourable Alex Ikwechegh. Tell the public I slapped you. Call the Inspector General of Police if you want.” This assertion has since sparked outrage among viewers, who condemned the lawmaker’s behavior as an abuse of power.

Ikwechegh’s political journey has been marked by controversies. In September 2023, the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, led by Justice Adeyinka Aderibigbe, ordered that Ikwechegh be issued a certificate of return after sacking Emeka Nnamani of the Labour Party, who was previously declared the winner of the election. The tribunal’s decision was based on allegations of certificate forgery against Nnamani.

The lawmaker, however, has previously faced legal disputes. In 2015, the Appeal Court, upon a petition from Blessing Nwagba, removed Nnamani from office due to issues related to his membership with APGA at the time of his election and allegations of certificate forgery.

Responding to the forgery allegations, Nnamani refuted claims that he had been banned from contesting elections for ten years, describing these as “lies from the pit of hell” used by political opponents. He attributed the controversy to a mix-up in his academic records when his educational institution transitioned from analogue to digital record-keeping.

Following the release of the video, there has been significant public backlash, with calls for Ikwechegh to face disciplinary action. APGA has condemned the incident, indicating that they are considering sanctions. The event has also reignited discussions on the misuse of power by public officials and the treatment of everyday citizens by those in authority.
