Hon. Alex Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North and Aba South in Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has vowed to provide a full response following accusations on social media that he assaulted a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseye, who had delivered a package to his residence.
The lawmaker, in a conversation with Vanguard on Monday night, confirmed he has received numerous inquiries nationwide regarding a viral video in which Abuwatseye alleges that Ikwechegh verbally and physically threatened him. Ikwechegh stated he intends to release an official statement on Tuesday to address the incident comprehensively.
The controversy began when a video clip emerged showing Ikwechegh purportedly slapping and verbally confronting the driver outside his Maitama residence in Abuja. In the footage, Ikwechegh allegedly chastised Abuwatseye, suggesting it was inappropriate for him to be asked to come outside to collect the package—a delivery of snails.
Further adding to the debate, the video reportedly includes remarks by the lawmaker about his social standing, allegedly warning he could “make the driver disappear” without repercussions.
