The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chapter in Abia State has stated that it is unfazed by a few of its members defecting to the rival All Progressives Congress (APC). It said that the defectors came to the realisation that the PDP no longer needed them. The party has also revealed that the “brief downturn” the umbrella party had in Abia during the 2023 polls was mostly caused by people who left the party. The Abia PDP made these claims on Tuesday in a news release that was signed by vice chairman and acting publicity secretary Abraham Amah.
According to him, the news that “a very few” PDP members in Abia State had defected to the APC caught the PDP’s attention. The PDP boasted that the defection was a blessing in disguise and said that it has had numerous applications from persons who want to join it in Abia.
“The Abia PDP truly appreciates the exit of these men because after the 2023 general elections, the Abia PDP did a post-mortem on itself and came to the inevitable conclusion that the Party needs to reinvent itself for the future and that the only way for that to happen would be for the party to shed weight not by expelling some people but for those responsible for its brief downturn to exit by themselves.
“That is exactly what has happened and the Abia PDP truly appreciates their exit after they recognised that they were no longer useful to the party in whatsoever form,” it stated.
Remember that on Monday, a number of prominent PDP members, including Anthony Agbazuere, the former chief of staff to former governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Eze Chikanmayo, the former commissioner for information and strategy, and many more, joined the APC, rocking the Abia political landscape.
