HRM Eze Kalu Kalu Ogbu, the respected traditional ruler of Abiriba ancient kingdom, and Igbo youths have endorsed the efforts of South-East Governors to secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The governors plan to meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to discuss Kanu’s freedom.
Eze Kalu Kalu Ogbu, also known as Anachoken Abiriba, praised the ongoing initiatives by the Governors and Igbo National Assembly members, describing their actions as commendable. In a recent interview with Sunday Vanguard in Umuahia, he emphasized that Kanu’s release is long overdue. He clarified that contrary to federal claims, Kanu did not jump bail but fled to save his life when attempts were made on his life.
“The efforts by Igbo leaders to negotiate Kanu’s release are commendable,” Eze Ogbu stated. “His release is overdue. The young man did not jump bail; he escaped because they intended to kill him.”
Echoing similar sentiments, the Coalition of South-East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) also declared their support for the Governors’ initiative. According to Goodluck Ibem, the President General of COSEYL, Kanu’s release is essential for restoring peace and fostering national cohesion in the South-East region.

Ibem highlighted the benefits of Kanu’s release, stating, “It is crucial for regional security and peace. Criminal elements exploiting his incarceration for their gains will be deterred. Moreover, the release will revitalize businesses and farming activities disrupted by insecurity.”
He further urged President Tinubu to address this urgent national issue, emphasizing that Kanu’s release would pave the way for dialogue and a peaceful resolution to long-standing issues in the South-East. “This move will de-escalate tensions and foster constructive conversations between the government and other agitation groups. It will show that the government is responsive to its citizens’ concerns,” Ibem added.
Both Eze Kalu Kalu Ogbu and COSEYL urged Igbo leaders to persist in their efforts until Kanu is finally released, stressing the importance of this action for national unity and progress.
