The Abia State government has confirmed the arrest of Onyekachi Nwabueze, a state civil servant, by the Department of State Services (DSS) over alleged multi-million naira pension fraud. The announcement was made by Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser to Governor Alex Otti, who stated that Nwabueze was taken into custody on Wednesday on charges including fraud, impersonation, and criminal diversion of pension funds.
The investigation reveals Nwabueze’s alleged role in a scheme to divert pension funds, depriving Abia State retirees of their rightful benefits. According to an interim DSS report, millions intended for retirees were unlawfully siphoned, a move condemned by Ekeoma as a betrayal of public trust. Ekeoma stated, “The Abia State Government is committed to pursuing justice to ensure the rights of our retirees are protected.”
Nwabueze has reportedly admitted involvement in the fraud and is assisting authorities in identifying other members of the alleged syndicate, some of whom remain at large. The Abia government has reassured the public that Nwabueze and any additional suspects will be treated lawfully and transparently as the investigation progresses. Security agencies are expected to continue efforts to dismantle the syndicate and bring all responsible parties to justice.
