The Imo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, in a landmark ruling in Abuja, reaffirmed Hope Uzodimma’s position as the duly elected Governor of Imo State, dismissing the petition filed by the Labour Party (LP) and its candidate Athan Achonu.
In a unanimous decision delivered by Justice Oluyemi Akintan-Osadebay, the tribunal emphasized the substantial compliance of Uzodimma’s election with the Electoral Act, effectively refuting the allegations raised by the LP regarding overvoting and non-compliance.
Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had previously declared Uzodimma, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the November 11 governorship election in Imo State.
Uzodimma’s victory, with 540,308 votes, saw him triumph over his closest rival, Senator Samuel Anyanwu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 71,503 votes. Athan Achonu, the LP candidate, secured the third position with 64,081 votes.

Despite the resounding victory margin, Achonu contested the outcome, alleging electoral irregularities in certain regions of the state and seeking the removal of the governor through legal channels.
However, the tribunal’s verdict has cemented Uzodimma’s mandate, underscoring the integrity of the electoral process and affirming the will of the people of Imo State.
