A distressing incident unfolded in Anambra State as a 24-year-old man, identified as Ebuka, lost his life after being shot by police officers along the Onitsha/Owerri Road. This has sparked public outrage, with many calling for immediate justice.
The event came to light after Harrison Gwamnishu, an activist and X user, shared details of the tragic shooting. According to Gwamnishu, Ebuka was traveling on the highway when he was shot by a group of officers. Despite being rushed to the hospital, the young man succumbed to his injuries from the gunshot wounds.
In his post, Gwamnishu revealed that the officers responsible for the shooting went into hiding following the incident. He shared photos and videos of the scene on his social media platform, appealing for swift action from the authorities.
“This 24-year-old was shot dead today by policemen along Onitsha/Owerri Road. The officers involved have fled, but we demand justice,” Gwamnishu wrote, tagging the Inspector General of Police and the Anambra Police Command.
The Nigeria Police Force has since responded to the outcry. Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force Spokesperson, expressed sadness over the incident, assuring the public that the responsible officers will face the law. Adejobi stated that the Commissioners of Police in both Anambra and Imo have been directed to apprehend the suspects and conduct a thorough investigation.
“This is a tragic event. We have instructed the relevant authorities to track down the officers involved and ensure that justice is served. We will not tolerate such behavior within the force,” Adejobi emphasized.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the arrest of the entire patrol team involved in the incident. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for a comprehensive investigation.

The Command stated, “The Commissioner of Police has ordered a detailed investigation into the matter, and the case is now under the SCID’s jurisdiction. We urge the public to remain calm as justice is pursued.”
This shooting has reignited conversations about police brutality in Nigeria, a persistent issue despite previous promises of reform. Last week, students from Ebonyi State University (EBSU) raised concerns over increasing incidents of police harassment and extortion in Abakaliki. They lamented how officers tasked with protecting the public have become a source of fear and frustration.
In a letter addressed to the Commissioner of Police, the President of the Students’ Union Government, Comrade Oshim Tobias Nkwegu, described the actions of the police as a “grave violation” of their constitutional duties, calling for urgent intervention to restore trust between the police and the community.
