Five Feared Killed, Many Injured As Security Forces Battle Gunmen In Anambra


Five people were presumed dead and others injured amid a gunfight between security personnel and gunmen in Anambra on Tuesday. The event occurred when the Anambra Joint Security Force (JSF) assaulted two gunman camps in Aguluezechukwu, Aguata council area, and Ogboji, Orumba South council area, respectively. During the raid, security personnel seized materials such as a locally built rocket launcher, charms, and police uniforms, among others.


Though Anambra police spokesman Ikenga Tochukwu did not provide the fatality count, The Nation learned that four militants and a police officer killed in the shootout. According to the source, their location resembled a war zone, with gunshots flying and deafening noises inducing panic and concern among inhabitants.


Last week, two police officers were killed in Awgbu, Orumba North local government area, and another police station was stormed by hoodlums. The Police Command in Awka issued a statement on Wednesday explaining that the search for the gunmen had been expanded to include the Obofia Forest, Aguluezechukwu, and Ogboji districts.
