4 Nigerian Wrestlers Secure Paris 2024 Olympic Qualification in Egypt

 

 

In a remarkable feat, four Nigerian wrestlers clinched coveted spots for the Paris 2024 Olympics during the ongoing African championships and Olympics qualifiers in Alexandria, Egypt.

 

Among the triumphant athletes is Blessing Oburududu, the silver medalist from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, who secured her place in Paris after a decisive 2-0 victory over Uilau Tarkong of Palau in the 68kg category.

 

Hannah Reuben, the World Military Champion in the 76kg division, exhibited her prowess by defeating Amy Youin of Cote D’Ivoire with a convincing 6-0 scoreline, sealing her spot for the upcoming Olympics.

 

Adding to the Nigerian contingent bound for Paris, Esther Kolawole displayed exceptional skill, triumphing over Angelina Rodrigues of Cape Verde with an impressive 10-0 victory.

In another remarkable performance, Christiana Ogunsanya, the African Games champion in the 53kg category, dominated her opponent, Egyptian Shaimaa Mohamed, with a resounding 10-0 win, securing her qualification for the Paris Olympics.

 

While these victories bring pride, there was a narrow miss for Mercy Genesis, who fell short of Olympic qualification after a close 5-7 defeat to Nada Mohamed of Egypt in the 50kg weight class.

 

With these accomplishments, five female wrestlers are set to represent Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympics, showcasing the country’s prowess on the international stage.

 

As the female wrestlers celebrate their success, Nigerian male freestyle wrestlers eagerly anticipate their chance to secure Olympic berths as they prepare to compete on Sunday, the final day of this qualifying window.

 

For those who miss out, there’s still hope, as the remaining Olympic slots will be contested at the 2024 World Qualification Tournament in Istanbul, Turkey, scheduled for May 9 to 12.

 

The African championships and Olympic qualifiers, which commenced on Monday in Alexandria, Egypt, are slated to conclude on Sunday, marking an eventful journey towards Olympic dreams. (NAN)
