Abia Assembly Passes Bill To Stop Pension For Ex-govs, Deputies

Yesterday, the Abia House of Assembly passed a law ending the state’s pension payments to past governors and their deputies.

“H.A.B 11: A Bill to Revoke the Abia State Governors and Deputy Governors Pensions Law No. 4 of 2001 and for other Matters connected in addition to that” is the title of the bill.

The measure was sponsored by Hon. Uchenna Okoro, the Minority Leader in the House and representative for Arochukwu State Constituency.

Following the bill’s first and second readings, deliberation in the committee of the whole, and third reading during the day’s plenary, Speaker Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa declared the legislation passed.

Emeruwa congratulated the members but pointed out that the law would save the state money on governance and divert it to development.

After state governor Dr. Alex Otti signs the measure, the Speaker claimed it will be known as the “Abia State Governors and Deputy Governor’s (Repeal) Law 2024.”

He declared that the legislation would go into effect on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, right away.

Former governors and their deputies will no longer be eligible for pension benefits following the conclusion of their terms under the measure.
