Student Dies During Cult Clash In Abia State University

Over the weekend, a cult conflict claimed the life of an Abia State University 400-level history and international relations student.

Following this week’s State Executive Council meeting, which was presided over by the state governor, Alex Otti, the Abia State Government confirmed the death on Monday.

Okey Kanu, the commissioner of information and culture, briefed reporters on the situation, stating that the state government had sent some security personnel to the establishment in an effort to get things back to normal.

He also advised students to focus on their academics and abstain from violence.

He said, “It has come to the notice of the state government about skirmishes in Abia State University, Uturu, between student groups where a student lost his life.

“Some remedial actions have been taken to return normalcy (in the institution). The state government has dispatched some security agencies to Abia State University Uturu.”

Following the resurgence of violence between the two opposing cult groups that resulted in the death of the 400-level student, tensions at the school are high.

According to eyewitnesses, the victim was attacked by members of a rival group inside the campus area, resulting in his death.

The state commissioner of police, Kenechukwu Onwumelie, stated that the police are aware of the situation and are looking into the occurrence; however, the school administration has not yet released a comment regarding it.
