Anambra State Government To Intrroduce Health Insurance For Tertiary Students

In an effort to improve healthcare services for students attending higher education institutions, the government of Anambra State is taking action to register students in the state for the Social Health Insurance Scheme.

This was disclosed by Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi, the Managing Director of the Anambra State Health Insurance Authority (ASHIA), while he was in Awka visiting Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu institution (COOU), the state’s institution.

According to Dr. Onyemaechi, the action is in compliance with the Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme Law of 2016, which is in line with the new National Health Insurance Authority Act of 2022, which mandates health insurance for all citizens.

In order to cover university students, ASHIA is recommending a premium of ₦4,000 per student per academic session in partnership with a healthcare organization.

This initiative aims to provide students with healthcare access beyond campus boundaries, ensuring coverage during vacations in accredited hospitals nationwide using their identity cards.

The primary objective is to guarantee students receive quality healthcare, promoting well-being both on and off campus.

Onyemaechi emphasized ASHIA’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare services to students throughout their university programs.

The Vice Chancellor of COOU, Prof. Kate Omenugha, acknowledged the initiative and commended the potential benefits that the health insurance plan may have for students.

Expecting a decrease in the cost of students’ access to healthcare, she stated that institutions are prepared to finish the documentation required for the program’s implementation before the next academic session.
