FG and NBA Collaborate to Prosecute INEC, others for Electoral Fraud

The Nigerian government, in collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has initiated legal action against individuals implicated in electoral fraud during the 2023 general elections. This move marks a significant step towards curbing electoral misconduct and promoting transparency in the electoral process.

Electoral fraud continues to pose a serious threat to the integrity of elections in Nigeria, often leading to political tension and violence. Following the 2023 presidential and National Assembly elections, former Inspector-General of Police Usman Baba reported over 700 arrests for violations of electoral laws.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in partnership with the NBA, has undertaken the prosecution of 215 individuals, including INEC officials and members of political parties, for various electoral offenses such as vote-buying and arms possession. These cases are being prosecuted in magistrates’ courts and high courts across the country.

The collaboration between INEC and the NBA underscores a commitment to holding perpetrators of electoral fraud accountable for their actions. By prosecuting offenders, the government aims to deter future misconduct and foster public confidence in the electoral process.
