NCC Directs MTN, Airtel, others to Block SIMs Without NIN

In a move aimed at strengthen national security, telecommunication companies (Telcos) have been instructed by the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) to deactivate SIM cards not linked to national identification numbers (NIN). The directive mandates Telcos to block phone lines of subscribers whose SIM cards remain unlinked to their NINs by February 28, 2024.

Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, emphasized the imperative of this measure during a special event at the ongoing 45th Kaduna International Trade Fair. Maida highlighted the linkage between subscribers’ NINs and SIM cards as a pivotal step towards enhancing national security.

To complete the NIN-SIM linkage, subscribers must furnish their NINs to their respective Service Providers. Maida underscored the NCC’s commitment to ensuring service availability, accessibility, affordability, and sustainability across all consumer segments leveraging ICT/Telecoms for personal and business endeavors.

The NCC has implemented a robust regulatory framework to foster transparency, quality of service, and fair competition, alongside establishing channels for consumer redress, facilitating timely dispute resolution.

Against the backdrop of this year’s trade fair theme, “Sustaining Economic Recovery through Deepening Local Content Value Chain,” Maida emphasized its alignment with the NCC’s objectives in promoting local content development within the telecoms industry.
