After collaborative sting operations by the State Homeland Security and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, has seen an end to the rings of illicit drug business that were flourishing in the squalid areas of the city. Large quantities of hard narcotics, such as cocaine, heroine, cannabis, and methamphetamine (mkpurumili), were found by the combined security team during raids at a motel in the infamous “Down Below” slum behind Okigwe Park and a private property on Arochukwu Street. The state commander of NDLEA, Amos Adelanwa, flanked the deputy governor of Abia, Ikechukwu Emetu, as he spoke at a press conference in Umuahia. Emetu expressed his happiness with the operation’s successful conclusion. He claimed that it was evidence of the Alex Otti administration’s will to eradicate all criminal activity in the state.Emetu made it clear that illegal narcotics “are the bedrock” of all criminal activity, which is why the government decided to address the threat as part of a long-term campaign against criminality.
