19 year-old-boy Electrocuted While Vandalizing Power Equipment in Enugu

A tragic incident occurred in Enugu yesterday when a 19-year-old boy was electrocuted while allegedly attempting to vandalize Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) equipment. The suspect, identified as Nwode Sunday, was found lifeless near EEDC transformers on Missionary Avenue, Coal Camp.

Emeka Ezeh, Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC, confirmed the incident. He stated that the deceased was discovered in the early hours within the transformer area. It is believed that the power supply was restored unexpectedly while the suspect was cutting armoured cables, leading to his electrocution.

Ezeh described the situation as both tragic and unfortunate, emphasizing the increasing frequency of vandalism targeting EEDC installations. He noted that these acts significantly impact service quality and company revenue.

“This growing trend of vandalism is a major challenge,” Ezeh stated. “We need the support of critical stakeholders to address this issue effectively. Vandalized transformers disrupt service to our customers, and it is a collective battle to safeguard these installations.”

Ezeh appealed to the community to help protect electrical infrastructure in their neighborhoods, stressing the importance of collaborative efforts to prevent such incidents.

Daniel Ndukwe, the Police Public Relations Officer in Enugu, also confirmed the story. He reported that the suspect was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead and his body was subsequently deposited in the mortuary for further investigation.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, issued a stern warning to individuals involved in criminal activities, urging them to desist to avoid severe legal consequences or unfortunate outcomes similar to this incident.
