In the aftermath of a prison break at the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre in Niger State, authorities have made progress in recapturing escapees. Following a severe downpour that damaged the facility and led to the escape of 119 inmates, efforts to locate and detain the fugitives have been ongoing.
The Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service reported that 14 of the fleeing inmates have been successfully apprehended, with efforts ongoing to locate the remaining escapees. Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, emphasized the need for reforms in the nation’s custodial centres, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
With collaborative efforts from intelligence officers, armed squadron officers, the Nigeria Police Force, DSS, and other security agencies, searches are being conducted in neighboring communities to locate and secure the remaining escapees. The government remains committed to restoring order and ensuring the safety of the public.
